Hypothyroidism
Article Abstract:
Hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces insufficient quantities of thyroid hormones, may originate in the thyroid gland or be secondary to other diseases or treatments. It can be classified as clinical or subclinical. The preferred treatment is daily oral administration of thyroxine sodium tablets. Treating this condition may reveal Addison's disease or diabetes mellitus, so it is important to assess glucose and electrolyte balance. The patient must eat a low calorie diet to reduce any obesity, and the diet must also be low in fat and cholesterol, to normalize the plasma lipid profile.

Overactive thyroid: is your thyroid `hyper'?
Article Abstract:
Hyperthyroidism is the condition caused by antibodies from the immune system when they increase hormone production. Sometimes the thyroid gland stimulates this action on its own. Indications of an overactive thyroid are sudden weight loss, irregular heartbeat, irritability, neck swelling at its base, protruding eyes, and muscle weakness. Antithyroid drugs help to reduce excessive hormone activity and are taken for about a year. Thyroidectomy is possible but uncommon when drugs do not work or patients refuse radioactive iodine therapy.
